All Vespa models introduced from 2023 onwards are now fitted with keyless start (FOB) ignition. No longer is a key inserted into the ignition to unlock the steering and start the bike.

The introduction of the keyless (FOB) ignition to the Vespa GTS, GTV, and new Primavera models brings some convenience, but has also introduced potential pitfalls that many owners may not be aware of.

𝐄𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲 𝐤𝐞𝐲 – “𝐃𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐞” (𝐬𝐞𝐞 𝐩𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐯𝐞)

𝐄𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐚 𝐬𝐚𝐟𝐞 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞.
The “Dongle” should never be carried with you, or be on the same keyring as the “FOB”. The “Dongle” is for emergency starts only. The main purpose of the “Dongle” is to code any additional “Fobs” you purchase.

Ever lost your keys? Adding a key tag to your keys with your name and phone number will make your chances of return a lot higher.

𝙏𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙣𝙤𝙩𝙚

𝟭 – We recommend locking the steering when parking your Vespa — this confirms that the ignition is fully in the ‘OFF’ position and helps prevent battery drain.

The ignition must be turned completely off to shut down the lights and onboard systems. We’ve had several riders caught out with a flat battery after leaving the ignition partially on, unaware that their Vespa was still drawing power."

If you use the Kill switch to stop the engine, you must remember to also turn the ignition off.
Unlike previous keyed models you must turn the key anticlockwise 2 positions to fully shut down the bike. Then press in and turn further to lock the ignition.

𝟮 – The “FOB” must be within 1 metre of the Vespa to start. However, once started, the engine will remain running even without the fob being in range. The engine will only shut down when turned off via the ignition or kill switch. This is a crucial safety and security reminder, especially for those unfamiliar with how keyless systems behave compared to traditional keys

𝟯 – If the “FOB” is not with the bike when riding, a red flashing light will be seen on the right side of the dashboard below the letters IMMO. This indicates the “FOB” is not being detected as being in range.

𝟰 – Starting your Vespa with the “Dongle” requires it to be placed over the Antenna marking found on the left knee pad to the left of the luggage hook.

𝟱 – Got a Top Box?
We’ve seen a significant number of riders unintentionally leaving their keys in the top box lock while riding. As there is no need to insert a key to start the scooter, riders aren’t being prompted to retrieve their keys after unlocking the top box when riding off."

Recently, a rider was alerted by another motorist that their keys had fallen out of the top box while riding. After retracing their route, the keys were recovered—but unfortunately, the “FOB”, garage remote, and other attached keys had been run over and damaged by passing vehicles."

“To make matters worse, the rider had switched off the Vespa while retrieving the keys. As expected, without a functioning fob, they were unable to restart their Vespa. What followed was an expensive afternoon involving an Uber ride home to fetch the “Dongle” and a $350 bill for a replacement “Fob”.
