𝐑𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐬𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝗫𝗺𝗮𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗱

𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗱𝗼𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗪𝗲𝗱𝗻𝗲𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝟐𝟰𝐭𝐡 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟱 𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝟰𝘁𝗵, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞.

The double demerit point scheme applies for the following types of offences:
Speeding
Seat belt
Motorcycle helmet
Mobile phone offences

Mobile Phone Detection Cameras are being enforced and fines issued.

𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘁 𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀
The first year of the demerit point reward for safe drivers trial ran from 17 January 2023 until 16 January 2024. It was extended for two extra years and will continue until 31 January 2026.

The Government will now introduce legislation to support the permanent Demerit Point Reward Program in early 2026.

All unrestricted NSW licence holders who have active demerit points– including professional drivers – are included in the trial to reward responsible driving behaviour.   

If an eligible driver maintains an offence-free record during the trial periods, one demerit point will be removed from their driving record.

A processing period follows the offence-free period to allow for the payment of any fines or resolution of court matters. The same process will occur at the end of the third year for all eligible drivers.

Learner and provisional licence holders were not included in the trial.

In December 2025, the NSW Government announced that the demerit point reward program would be made permanent, with legislation to support the program to be introduced in early 2026.
